Intro to Digital Photography Project 23’
BEHIND THE RHYTHM
Our ears are often graced with many sounds: roaring car engines, screeching trains, crying babies, laughing people, barking dogs, and more. Ever so often, our ears are graced with the booming rhythms of musicians seated on the corners of streets, the fronts of museums, and the steps of subway stops.
Hearing these sounds is routine for many of us, with little time to spare and absorb the shared music. Inspired by my yielding passion for music and curiosity towards people's stories, my goal for this project was to further engage with those artists. Learning a brief history of who they are and their artistic journey.
To execute this project, my chosen genre was street photography, and my stylistic direction was Visual Realism. I intended to capture the subjects in their element and highlight the relationship between the audience and the performer.
The photos are highly contrasted with an emphasis on the black and white tones to evoke the intimate emotions of the musicians and their instruments. The photo compositions play between wide, medium, and close-up shots to enrich the story of the musicians and their connection to the website. Wide shots give the audience a sense of the environment, medium shots capture portraits of the musician’s emotions and expressions, and close-up shots bring the viewer’s attention to the tools and hands making the sounds.
